OKR Review - Iterate to Perform πŸš€

In this edition, we delve into the critical practice of OKR Review, a vital component for any organization aiming to scale new business models. We will outline the process of evaluating and enhancing your team's performance through effective OKR management.

Executing the OKR Review

Executing the Review covers two Steps, the OKR Scoring and the Review Discussion.

OKR Scoring

  • This step involves recording and scoring each Objective and its corresponding Key Results. Scores range from 0-1 (where 1 equals 100% achievement), providing a clear, numerical representation of progress.

  • Assign a team member to record scores in the OKR Scoring Template. Each Key Result owner shares their results, which are then averaged to score each Objective.

OKR Review Discussion

  • This step is a reflective dialogue focusing on the Key Results' relevance and effectiveness, aimed at gleaning actionable insights for future improvement.

  • The discussion focuses only on your Key Results and their scores since they are closer to the actual execution making the review more concrete.

  • Keep each Key Result review to a maximum of 20 minutes for efficiency. If earlier discussions were quicker, allocate the saved time to other key results as needed.

  • Statements during the review should be forward-thinking, solution-oriented, and rooted in self-reflection. No complaint is valid without a proposed solution.

  • Focus on three aspects during the discussion: Personal Contribution, Third-Party Contribution, and the Relevance of the Objective. Use guiding questions to stimulate insightful feedback.

  • Example Questions -Personal Contribution:

    • Did I allocate sufficient time to achieve the Objective?

    • Did I follow a strategically sound approach?

    • Did I possess the necessary skills/expertise?

    • Did I have adequate financial resources?

    • Did I critically assess results and changes during execution?

  • Example Questions -Third-Party Contribution (team or external):

    • Did others contribute the necessary time and resources (skills, expertise, and finances)to the objective?

    • Did they collaborate effectively with each other?

    • Did they have the necessary skills/expertise and resources (time, money)?

    • Did they critically assess results and changes during execution?

  • Example Questions -Relevance of the Objective:

    • Was the Objective and its Key Results still relevant during the OKR cycle?

    • Were the Objectives and Key Results the primary focus during the sprints?

Post-Review Actions After the review, use the insights gathered to inform the creation of the next month's backlog. Adjust objectives and key results as necessary based on the feedback.

Remember, the essence of the OKR Review is not just in scoring but in the valuable insights and adjustments that come from reflective discussions. Embrace this practice to enhance your team's focus, efficiency, and overall success in meeting your quarterly objectives.
